Smail Ferroudj's professional playing career took him from Algeria's top divisions to the pitches of Paris, and today his coaching career is shaping the next generation of players in the United States.
The story
A player who became a builder.
Smail Ferroudj was born in Akbou, Algeria and launched his career at 14 with hometown club ORBAkbou, promoted to the senior squad by his 16th birthday. As a defensive midfielder he helped drive the club to promotion in 1992–1993 with 15 goals and 10 assists, then joined MOBejaia for an undefeated two-season run.
Three seasons at RCKouba brought a 1997 championship, a standout 16-goal, 14-assist 1997–1998 campaign, and the club's 1999 "Best Goal of the Season." He went on to sign with MCAlger, the most popular club in Algeria, with a fanbase of more than 80,000 - for two seasons before moving to Paris in 2002 to study Psychology at Université Paris 5 (Sorbonne). There he scored 20 goals for the university club, led them to their first-ever playoff qualification, and captured the Clairefontaine Tournament crown as Best Striker with 6 goals in 5 matches against the 16 best universities in Paris.
His coaching career began after relocating to the United States. Nearly a decade in, Smail is a USSF Pro Coach License holder who has worked with players from first-time kickers to serious pro-track hopefuls. He referees matches, mentors newer coaches, and consults with clubs looking to raise their standards on and off the field.
His philosophy is simple: technique wins games, but character builds careers. Every session he runs and every talk he gives comes back to that.

Born in Akbou, Smail launched his soccer career at 14 with hometown club ORBAkbou, promoted to the senior team by his 16th birthday.

In 1992–1993 he helped ORBAkbou earn advancement to a superior division, contributing 15 goals and 10 assists as a defensive midfielder. Promotion again in 1993–1994 with 15 goals and 12 assists.
